Шестидесятые — это резкий рост населения в городе: если в 1959 году в Сочи проживало 81 912 человек, то уже в 1962 — 174 000. Соответственно, пассажиропоток стремительно увеличивался, что не могло не сказаться на общественном транспорте. Он становился более вместительным, чтобы отвечать новым демографическим вызовам. И хотя по городу продолжают ездить автобусы пятидесятых, на улицах начинают мелькать новые модели: здесь проходит «испытание поединком горами» автобусы ЛиАЗ-677 и «Икарус-180».
17 сентября 1964 года «ЛиАЗ» и «Икарус» выходят на рейсы и начинают соревноваться. В условиях субтропиков и гор, победу одерживает «Икарус», который в течение 40 лет безраздельно властвовал в Сочи. В 1967 году СССР начал активно закупать «Икарусы» у Венгрии, а уже в конце 60-х они стали активно курсировать по курорту. 16-метровые сочлененные автобусы могли принять до 190 человек в «час пик». Гидроусилитель, максимальная скорость 63 км/ч и невиданная для тех лет комфортность.
В это же время сочинский ЦАРМ активно выпускает модифицированные и адаптированные к городским реалиям экскурсионные автобусы (см. выше последние 5 фотографий).
В городе продолжают встречаться «дореволюционные автобусы», ЛАЗы и ПАЗы, но в целом эпоха «Икарусов» продолжается. Так как советская автобусная промышленность не нашла более качественных решений, импорт из Венгрии по-прежнему не ослабевает, поставляя в Сочи новенькие «Икарусы». Изменились только модели, которые становились современнее и удобнее. Появляется Икарус-255, 260 и 280.
«Икарусы» выполняли как междугородние рейсы, так и городские, не говоря уже про то, что многие автобусы принадлежали санаториям, использовавших их для трансфера своих отдыхающих. Знаменитые сочлененные («гармошки») желтые Икарусы-280 ходили по центральным маршрутам, где дороги были ровные и широкие, а более компактные 260-е ходили практически во все микрорайоны, уступая только в самых сложных участках еще более маневренным ЛАЗам и ПАЗам.
Нельзя не рассказать про самый знаменитый городской автобус — открытый Икарус-255. Единственный в СССР подобный автобус появился в Сочи примерно в 1978 году, а уже в 1979 поучаствовал в фильме «Бабушки на двое сказали». Самый популярный автобус у сочинских детей работал в летний сезон по маршруту №28 «Ривьера — Малый Ахун». Также возил экскурсии и принимал участие в различных праздничных мероприятиях. Яркий автобус проработал в Сочи до 1986 года, после чего по неподтвержденным данным недолго попутешествовал и был утилизирован в 2002 году.
Перед развалом страны особых изменений в транспортной инфраструктуре не произошло: в основной своей массе Икарусы-256, 260, 280 и вкрапления ЛАЗов и ПАЗов. Также в этот период активизируется маршрутное такси — их количество начинает стремительно увеличиваться: РАФ-2203 и РАФ-977 начинают занимать свою нишу в пассажирских перевозках.
