Идея провести выставку в заброшенном дворе выросла из обыкновенного маршрута, которым пользовалась Оксана Будулак и её друзья: «Мы жили рядом с центром города и около года ходили друг к другу в гости по улице, рядом с которой стояли гаражи и непонятная штука с рамами. Мы думали, что же это могло быть, и выяснилось, что там раньше висели портреты передовиков — работников коммунального хозяйства, например прачек или электриков». Дальше удачно сложились два обстоятельства. Во-первых, Оксана работает заместителем директора в музейном центре «Площадь мира», и среди её знакомых много художников. А во-вторых, рамы во дворе были достаточно прочными, чтобы в них можно было поместить картины. Так родилась идея проекта «Флаг в руки». В его названии обыграли флажки, прикреплённые к конструкциям.
В команду вошли три человека: куратор, менеджер и дизайнер. Первым делом они стали выяснять, кому принадлежит территория, на которой собрались провести интервенцию. Оказалось — рядом стоящей бане. Её владелец был не против, чтобы конструкции использовали по-новому и провели во дворе открытие выставки, более того, поинтересовался, не могли бы художники создать рисунки на нескольких банях, принадлежащих ему. Правда, эта идея так и не реализовалась.
Зато в августе 2016 года на «Флагах» провели первую выставку. «Мы позвали 20 художников, каждому выделили раму. Причём никаких особенных требований к опыту или портфолио не было, участвовали даже студенты первых курсов. На всякий случай мы назвали место уличной галереей. Потом разослали по СМИ пресс-релиз о будущем вернисаже и позвали друзей с колонками», — вспоминает Оксана.
По словам Оксаны, поначалу к галерее и её посетителям относились с подозрительностью и повышенным вниманием как к новым людям в этом месте. Потом, наоборот, местные охранники стали рассказывать организаторам, что на неделе происходило на площадке. Свою пользу от вернисажей получал и буфет бани. Впрочем, в первый раз его работники тоже были слегка озадачены, потому что за один час участники скупили весь его небольшой запас пива.
А организаторов удивило то, что с «Флагов» украли несколько картин. Поначалу они отнеслись к этому философски. «Момент кражи сам по себе очень интересный. С одной стороны, это признание. Представьте, что никому не известный пока художник принес работу, это его вторая или третья в жизни выставка, и картину тайно срезали. Значит, понравилась. С другой — кража — это плохо и обидно. Причём у меня ощущение, что это и привычка у людей, и зажим. Мы как-то работали с городом Назарово, который был назван культурной столицей Красноярского края. Об этом написали на большом баннере рядом с Домом культуры. Так вот баннер утащили на следующий день после того, как повесили, чтобы накрывать на даче рассаду».
Кражу картин осветили в прессе, а у команды тем временем родилась идея обыграть эту утрату. Ведь если люди воруют искусство, значит хотят его иметь, но не знают как. После первой выставки команда решила проводить тематические вернисажи. Апрельский был посвящён весне и назывался «Лужи по колено». Правда, в тот день пришедших посмотреть на уличное искусство заметал снег. Зато плохая погода стала стимулом для фотоэксперимента. Один из посетителей смотрел на открытие выставки из бани. Взял с собой тапочки, халат, устроился за столиком буфета и присылал организаторам фотографии их деятельности со стороны.

Приятель-электрик готов проконсультировать по поводу фонаря, а владельцы столярной мастерской — распилить доски.
